most of my pics have a common theme - moorland boundary stones, bench marks inscriptions and aircraft wrecks -this is because I was asked to " investigate " some 50 year old notes & maps from a female rambler that were given to Bradfield Parish Council on which she had noted the position of the various stones ( as well as fauna which I have yet to look for)as she wandered across the moors with friends including the Sheffield Clarion Ramblers,   sometimes illegally -remember this was before access agreements   & the C.R.O.W. act which we take for granted.
the rock on the left bears the mark in the photo on the right,is it a benchmark or a mark made when nearby Pike   Low was a burial cairn? Joanna Campbell one of my friends & a Ranger from Langsett found it whilst we were out on one her days as a trainee. This one wasn't on the map or notes.Joanna claims it as hers & a competition still exists as to who can find more "marks "

BENCHMARKS - usually a horizontal line with an arrow point touching it chiselled into rocks, walls or buildings   ( sometimes they can be a square with a circle in one corner )-by surveyors from The Ordnance Survey starting in 1840 & discontinued in the 1960s when aerial surveys & then Global Positioning Systems took over - these were used to determine the height above sea level for that particular spot by placing an Angle iron in the line and bracketing (bench ) a levelling rod.If the precise height of one was known then the precise height of its neighbour could be determined using theodolites. These heights were determined from FUNDAMENTAL BENCHMARKS -this is a granite pillar built over an underground chamber and sited directly onto the bedrock so that they cannot move as other benchmarks possibly could.
